The Transformation of the Downtown Layered Bakery

The Transformation.

There is something about the process of a transformation that all of us human beings love. Most little girls will tell you that their favorite princess is Cinderella and nothing ignites the human soul quite like the story of the underdog who overcomes defeat and triumph rides into victory. It gives us hope and gives us permission to dream the impossible.

Back in the Fall of 2018 the sister duo behind the lovely Layered Bakery- Elena and Concetta approached me about helping them with the design of their new bakery. They told me the address and had me meet them there. When I pulled up, my first thought was - Should I tell them to run now? This place seemed to be swarming with unknowns. But on the other hand I was thinking. Wow this could have amazing potential. That first thought quickly disappeared and I knew the new location for the Layered bakery was going to be a unprecedented architecture statement in downtown Kennewick.

The Vision

Our vision was a small town french bakery. We wanted the bakery to take customers to a place as if they were on a cobblestone street in a small town in Italy and they strolled into a bakery on a lazy Saturday afternoon. Offering a customer’s experience was a must as well as weaving in Concetta’s and Elena’s story in the design process.

We found this amazing brick wall underneath layers and layers of who knows what.

The After

Pinky swear this is same place. We did a custom island with butcher block surface. The back countertop we did a quartz in a marble pattern. Flooring, we decided to polish up the old concrete floors and loved the surprise brick wall we found.

This space not only serves as a bakery but also a venu that can be rented out for events and parties. In the design process we wanted to create an intimate memorable backdrop for future guests.

The seating area. We decided to paint the ceiling white and add neutral furnishings to create a soft cozy feel.

Let’s not forget about the bathroom. We decided to not hold back here. Black, brass and white was the perfect palette for a classic modern french La Toilette.

Now if your in town, be sure to check out the Layered Bakery located on 117 W. Kennewick Ave. in Kennewick, Wa. They make the most beautiful desserts and they really taste as good as they look. Swear on the bible. I don’t know how it’s possible but they have mastered the art of making something as good as it looks!

So there you have it, transformation at its best. Tearing down the old to create room for a beautiful new idea but also keeping some of the old worn pieces that tells the endearing story of downtown Kennewick.

Have a wonderful week,

Love, Hayley
