My Favorite Way to Decorate Above the Bed

Hello!

Let’s talk about the walls surrounding your bed.

I know there are lots of different ways to design your bedroom walls. But I am going to give you my favorite recipe for “ABOVE the bed and the SIDE of the bed”. You can play around with this recipe with different variations. The main thing is to ask yourself, “what feels right to me?” and “when I walk into my room how do I want to feel?”

Let’s start at the top.

Above the BED.

My favorite thing to do above a bed is 1, 2, 3 or 4 prints in a row. These are some designs that I picked out just for you that really inspired me for this post. A series of prints really make a simple and dramatic look. Opting for just one large print is also a great choice.

Gentle Reminder: Don’t over complicate it. Look at magazines and pinterest and notice what kind of art you are drawn too. Do you like colorful and playful prints or are you more drawn to landscapes etc.? Once you figure out what you like- make yourself a plan to collect and frame the prints!

Now let’s move to the SIDE.

The Side of Bed

I ALWAYS make sure to have lamp on my bedside tables. Think of it this way: your eye starts at the top of the bed then goes to the lamp then to night stand. The lamp is a great place for you eye to rest. Scale is also important. A good rule of thumb is 30” tall. From the top of the shade to the bottom.

Now you can just leave it at the lamp and call it a day! OR you can add framed art, mirror or stacked art. I added some of my favorite bedside table combinations that I think are done really WELL. Enjoy!

A few tips when looking for Art:

  • Mix up the mediums. This helps the space from feeling flat. For example: if you did a series of floral sketches above you bed. For the side of you bed you could do a oil painting or frame an object. I love the dimension a framed object can give a room!

  • Always be on the lookout for great art. Antique shops, local artists or when you are traveling are great ways to collect a curated art collection.

Hope this Recipe helps with your TOP and SIDE of bed planning! See you next week!

Creating a family room that invites CONNECTION.

With 5 littles and a VERY busy mom and dad, this family room need to function as a place to reconnect at the end of long of a day. We picked furnishings that were high quality and durable for tiny little hands without compromising style.

Corner Fireplace before. Since our client has 9”ft. ceilings, we removed the hearth to have a more clean look and added stone to the ceiling to help lengthen the fireplace. And then to finish the look, we added a custom mantle. We picked a little darker stain then the flooring to give depth to the fireplace.

Modern Traditional Media center to offset the fireplace. A perfect piece to ground the TV.

Having enough seating for a family of 7 was a challenge for this small family room. We maximized seating with a leather sectional and two arm chairs. We played with different, textures, patterns and wood tones to give this living a room an elevated collective look.

This staircase was my favorite part of the whole transformation. It completely changed the way the home greets you when you walk in the front door. We decided on simple metal balusters for a simple but dramatic look.

We removed the pony wall and added the wooden handrail with the metal balusters. Now when you walk into our client’s home you are greeted by stairs that have transformed into an amazing architecture element.

This family room is now a place that the family loves to gather and make memories. It’s the beating heart of the home. Designing a space is not just about making it MORE beautiful. It’s so much MORE. Our goal is for our designs to connect with the heart and the soul.

Home Safe Home

Walking into my parents home after being away from college was one of the BEST feelings. I felt safe, relief, and comfort. I instantly felt like a blanket was being wrapped around me. Sorry that’s a little mushy. But I can’t think of a better way to describe it. I was HOME. I had a place. And knew I was loved. I am so thankful in this scary and uncertain time we have our homes to protect our children and families. I know there are a lot of others who face very difficult things in life without a home surrounded by loved ones. So thinking of this one simple but essential blessing has helped me keep things in perspective.

And since we are going to be spending a lot of time in our houses, I thought I would share with you some of my favorite art prints that bring me comfort and peace.

Slim House Studios
