Firerock Family Room / Fireplace Remodel

Entryway is ready to greet you!

We are thrilled to show you one of our latest projects! We had the sweetest client who was so delightful to work with. She was a true ray of sunshine and the goal was for her home to reflect her beautiful soul. This client wanted her family room and entryway updated to be more functional. The before family room felt a little dark and was not living up to its full potential. We intentionally wanted to create a fresh and airy space that our clients could be proud of and enjoy spending time with their family and friends.

We specifically chose textiles and surfaces that served two main purposes.

  1. They needed to be hardworking and durable for their little family of 5.

  2. The furnishings needed to be both sophisticated and functional for entertaining guests.

Now let me introduce you to our lovely Firerock Family Room remodel!

Before:

We replaced the carpet and tile with a beautiful light white oak wide plank engineered hardwood floor. We used the flooring in the entryway, family room and kitchen as well as hallways. Just doing this one update made a huge impact on the look and especially the feel of the space.

We then added window seats next to fireplace. The fireplace before felt like it was just a stand alone wallflower. Adding the window seats and and changing the shape of the fireplace made it feel like the space was connected, which in return invites connection. The smokey dark quartz was the perfect contrast to the light and bright color palette. We coated the fireplace with a smooth plaster finish to give an organic touch to the space.

The built-ins were painted in a semi gloss SW Greek Villa creamy white. The walls and fireplace were all painted in SW Greek Villa as well. The beam was stained a warm color just a few shades darker than the floor but same tone for a cohesive look.

Warm white builtins with stain wood deck

Due to the angled ceiling, we wanted to frame the room with the beam which helped ground the space and give your eyes a nice place to rest.

We loved helping our client create a home her family loves coming home to. Having her express to us how much she loves spending time with her sweet family and friends in her newly designed space makes this job so rewarding!

School House Electric

School House Electric

I know most of you don’t even want to talk to about the H word right now. AKA Homeschool.

But depending on where you live there is a good chance us parents are going to pull up our sleeves and start the school year with online learning.

I’m in that mindset right now and I thought to myself- how could I make this fun? I fully expect this new adventure to to take on the form of a train wreck but maybe I could have a little fun during the train wreck? Who knows.

Remember those days when we were little girls and how we loved to play school? And it and it was always a battle of who got to be teacher. Guess what? We finally get to be teacher everyday now! You can either laugh or cry now. No one is judging.

Here are some ways you can create an organized workspace for your children and yourself. I think the key is keeping it simple and having a consistent system you can follow on a daily basis.

Desk or Table?

*Consider how much flat surface space you will need and also take the size of your space into consideration. Having a table in the middle of the room is a great option if you have the space.

If you are limited on space, double desks against the the wall or a built in desk is a great way to utilize your space.

Reading Nook

Cozy lounge seating makes for a great reading nook.

*Incorporating a bench seat or reading nook is a fun way to make the space feely cozy and relaxing. And of course makes reading more enjoyable.

Adding a rug will help anchor the whole room. Using a fun pattern such a stripe, pattern or playful print with give the room a charming childlike feel.

Storage

Bookshelves are perfect way to corral the endless sea of papers. Keeping labeled bins and baskets will go along ways in keeping things tidy.

*Having fun prints for the children to look at and a place to display their art is a VERY GOOD THING as Martha Stuart would say.

Inspiration

If I were to design a homework station for my house TODAY. This is what I would do. Tomorrow? Who knows. My guess I would probably come up with something totally different.

Enjoy!

Subway Tile Roundup!

Hello friends! I thought it was due time for a roundup. Who doesn’t love a good roundup, right? I decided subway tiles would be the PERFECT candidate! Subway tile is not going away anytime soon. ( Which I’m thrilled about btw). Even after 10-12 years of seeing subway tiles, I still love them. Subway tile has evolved from the typical white 3x6 to a more hand crafted look. I’m always on the look for beautiful subway tiles that are unique and have a little bit of a twist . These days I am loving the clay tiles, subtle green/blues and tiles with slight variations. It has a more artisan bespoke look that feels so timeless and charming.

Here are some of my favorites! Enjoy! All sources at bottom of post. ( click on image.)

  1. This green gray tile has a slight hand cut edge with subtle crackle that would give a kitchen a real wow factor!

This is a great more affordable option in white where you still get the hand-cut look.

3. The ever popular Cloe. I have used this tile in a few projects and every time I STILL l fall in love all over again when installed. The color variation in this tile is stunning.

4. This is a new one that I would love to use for a laundry room or kids bath!

5. An oldie but a goodie: the beveled tile. I still love this tile. It’s a classic twist on the typical white subway.
